New Country, New Baby, New Hope: A Family’s Path to Stability

When a young family arrived in the United States in July 2024, they carried more than their bags—they carried fear, uncertainty, and hope for a better life. The mother was pregnant, and they had a 2-year-old child. With nowhere to go upon reaching San Francisco, they found themselves in a crisis just days after crossing the border.

Thankfully, the Homeless Prenatal Program referred them to the Oasis Family Shelter. They arrived on August 16, 2024—just days after the mother gave birth.

The family had no income, no home, and no local support system. But they had each other—and soon, they had a team behind them. Oasis case managers provided hands-on support to begin stabilizing their situation. Through referrals to the Latino Task Force and the Mission Economic Development Agency, both parents began participating in job readiness programs and job searches.

The family’s 2-year-old began receiving support as well. With case managers’ help, the family was connected to the Golden Gate Regional Center, where they began the process of getting autism-related services for their child. The case management team helped complete the necessary documentation, making sure no opportunity for support was missed.

The family also faced unique and deeply personal challenges. During moments of marital tension, staff were there—not to judge, but to support. And, when it came time to navigate the complexities of immigration court, Oasis case managers stood beside them, offering both emotional and logistical support, during a very difficult political climate.

In April 2025, the family was referred to the Rapid Rehousing Safer Families Program, a housing subsidy initiative. With the support of Catholic Charities, they began an active housing search. After months of preparation and perseverance, the family is now scheduled to move into their new home on August 15, 2025. This marks exactly one year since they first arrived at the Oasis shelter.

Their journey has not been easy. But through every setback and every milestone, this family has moved forward with strength, love, and steady support of the Oasis Family Shelter community!
