In Search of a Better Life and Having Your Own HOME

Christian was a single father in search of a better life for his only child. After returning home from incarceration, he found himself in a toxic environment marked by domestic violence and abuse from a partner who had been supervising his daughter while he was away. Desperate for a fresh start, Christian made the difficult decision to leave that household and spent five months moving between numerous hotels across the city of San Francisco before arriving at Oasis Family Shelter on December 16, 2025.

When I began working with Christian as his assigned Case Manager in April 2026, I could tell that he felt lost. Navigating fatherhood alone was not easy, especially while supporting a child with a hearing impairment and psychological trauma from witnessing abuse and experiencing homelessness. However, working toward each goal we established together felt natural because Christian’s greatest motivation was his 10-year-old daughter, who looked at her father as her hero.

Over the following weeks, I supported Christian with record expungement, job-search assistance, and document compilation to help set his family up for long-term success. When reflecting on the support he received from Oasis Family Shelter staff, Christian shared, “It feels good to be held responsible for my goals and responsibilities.”

After months of hard work and support from the Providence Foundation of San Francisco, Christian received a call from the Homeless Prenatal Program on June 12, 2026, and officially began his housing search two weeks later. From that moment forward, my goal as Christian’s Case Manager was to help ensure a smooth transition into his new home—a home that would represent his greatest goal of all: a fresh start.

Finally, on September 22, 2026, Christian surprised his daughter with the keys to their new home: a two-bedroom townhouse on the outskirts of San Francisco, complete with a backyard and a beautiful view of the city from his daughter’s window. For the first time in a long time, she would have a place to play, invite her friends over, and celebrate her 11th birthday in October.

When Christian expressed his gratitude and said his final goodbyes to the shelter staff, he became emotional. He shared that he could not have accomplished his dreams without the support he received at Oasis. In our final moment together, Christian stood before me, dangling the keys that had changed his life.

Those keys represented far more than a new home. They represented safety, stability, fatherhood, and the fresh start Christian had fought so hard to give his daughter. After months of uncertainty, he was no longer simply searching for a place to live—he had finally created a place they could call home. And as he walked away with his daughter and those keys in hand, Christian left Oasis with something even greater than a home: the confidence that he had built a new beginning for his family.
